Preparation:
When you arrive at the Turkish bath, you will be given a peshtemal (a traditional Turkish towel) and a pair of wooden clogs to wear. You'll also be shown to a changing area where you can disrobe and store your belongings securely.
Steam Room:
The Turkish bath experience typically begins in a steam room or sauna-like environment. The high humidity and warm temperatures help open up your pores, relax your muscles, and prepare your body for the cleansing process. You'll spend some time here to sweat and relax.
Scrubbing:
After the steam room, you'll be led to a heated marble slab called a "gobek tasi." Here, an attendant, known as a "tellak" for men or a "natir" for women, will exfoliate your skin using a special exfoliating glove or mitt called a "kese." This process removes dead skin cells, leaving your skin feeling soft and smooth. It can be invigorating but not painful.
Foam Massage:
Following the scrubbing, you'll receive a soapy foam massage. The tellak or natir will create a rich lather using a special soap and water, and then they'll massage you using gentle, flowing motions. This part of the experience is very relaxing and soothing.
Rinse and Relax:
After the foam massage, you'll be rinsed thoroughly with warm water to remove any soap residue. You can then relax in a quiet area, enjoy some herbal tea, or simply unwind on a comfortable lounge chair.
Duration:
A typical Turkish bath experience can last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour or more, depending on the package you choos.
